Austin Kleon is a writer who draws. He’s also an author and speaker and has a book called Steal Like An Artist coming out in February 2012. The book is based on this blog post which is full of Kleon’s drawings and ideas on how to be a great artist.
In the blog post Kleon gives tips on everything about being an artist from where to find inspiration to having a day job. The final tip in the post says “creativity is subtraction” and Kleon notes that “devoting yourself to something means shutting other things out.” I find this to be a vital responsibility an artist has. There is a yes and no to the work you commit yourself to.
I look forward to purchasing Kleon’s book and seeing what I need to say yes and no to as an artist.
My copy of Listography has collected dust on a bookshelf for the past three years. It has been one of the better Christmas gifts given to me by a friend and I have yet to fill it out. It now sits on my bedside table so I can work on it before I go to sleep. I still forget to fill it out.
Listography is a great concept allowing creativity through lists. The series has a few different books to choose from along with an online extension and iPhone app for people to create and share their own life lists.
